ISGA Update: Changes to the Australian Video Games Classification System from 22 September 2024

The changes will apply to video games on mobile devices and tablets, as well as computers and gaming consoles, phones and tablets.

The Australian Government is changing the way some video games are classified. These changes will take effect from 22 September 2024.

The changes will apply to video games on mobile devices and tablets, as well as computers and gaming consoles, phones and tablets.

From 22 September 2024, video games that include:

  • In-game purchases with an element of chance (often known as ‘loot boxes’) will have a minimum classification of ‘M’ (i.e., not recommended for children under 15 years of age).

  • Simulated gambling (e.g., social casino games) will be legally restricted to adults with a minimum classification of ‘R18+’ (i.e., restricted to adults 18 years and over).

The upcoming changes will bring video game classifications in line with existing age-based restrictions found in the real world. Games classified prior to 22 September 2024 will retain their status unless their classification is revoked or modified. In such cases, they will need to undergo reclassification under the new guidelines.

ISGA is working closely with members who are some of the world’s leading game developers, to ensure they understand their compliance obligations under Australia’s new classification system.

In addition to this, ISGA promotes player education though it’s Smart Mobile Gamers site. This resource has been developed with some of the world’s most respected digital safety organisations, clinical psychologists and games researchers, and aims to provide gamers with the tools and advice they need to have a positive experience.

ISGA also has a regularly updated set of Best Practice Principles and a new iteration will be released shortly reflecting best practice in the social games industry in Australia and around the world.
